Join IEEE

Short version:

To join UMIEEE, sign up with IEEE International at http://ieee.org/join, then drop by our lounge at EITC E1-514 and get Burke to set you up an account on our network and website. UMIEEE membership is free if this is your first year in IEEE International, otherwise it's $10.

Long version:

Joining IEEE gives you access to a vast array or resources. All members receive a subscription to IEEE Spectrum, a great magazine loaded with articles about current developments in science and technology. You also gain full access to IEEE.tv, an internet video channel covering a wide variety of topics relevant to electrical and computer engineers and students. In addition, you gain access to the IEEE Xplore website, which houses documents, standards and other related papers, all at your fingertips in a convenient searchable online format. Membership also gives you access to an IEEE-only jobs website, which helps you to quickly find an employer interested in your skill set.

Student membership in IEEE International is only $32 per year. You can sign up online anytime at http://ieee.org/join.

Membership in UMIEEE is free for first-year members of IEEE International. For returning members, there is a $10 fee.

As if you weren't getting enough bang for your 32 bucks already, UMIEEE offers all of its members several very significant benefits.

First and foremost, membership grants you access to our lounge and lab, located at E1-514 in the Engineering and Information Technology Complex at the University of Manitoba's Fort Garry Campus. Our lab aims to have every piece of equipment necessary to complete any lab in the Electrical or Computer Engineering degrees. We have cutting-edge workstations, oscilloscopes, and more. Our lounge, on the other hand, is a great place to study or just hang out. We have a 42-inch TV (that's less than $1/inch!), several video game consoles, more couches than I can count on one hand, and a couple of tables to study at.

Our lounge is also home to the UMIEEE canteen. We usually stock an assortment or drinks, snacks, and burrito-like lunch items. Membership grants you access to the members-only online canteen system, which gives members incredibly affordable prices.

Over the years, UMIEEE has been collecting course notes, assignments, old exams, and so on in our course archives. We are currently in the process of digitalizing this collection to kickstart the UMIEEE Archives, which will give our members access to everything they could ever want to know about any course offered in the electrical and computer engineering programs here at the University of Manitoba.

UMIEEE holds events and seminars throughout the year, which all members can attend at a discounted price. Traditionally, we have held Linux and Matlab seminars, and we will continue to do so, but we also have several new ideas for the 2008/09 year.
